Least

At a meeting of deacons, we decided that each of us would offer three words to describe the deacon’s ministry. I heard: love, patience, caring, lifting, helping, justice, ministry, and others … all good words, but I would be the last to offer my three and, with so many words already offered, there would be precious few words left for me. My turn came, all eyes upon me, I was given these three words: “Least of these.” Only later did I recall Jesus’ words, “… Just as you did it to one of the least of these … you did it to me.” *
