Eight years ago I received a letter from a skeptical acquaintance asking why I am a Christian. I replied, “I’ve often thought about this. There are many reasons to be a Christian. Central to my own understanding is that Christians are expected not only to forgive someone when they hurt us or fail us, but we are to work tirelessly and pray always that everyone, everywhere might live their lives with all the joy, possibility, dignity and peace that we ask for ourselves. There is enough to go around. We should ask nothing for ourselves at the expense of another.”
