Coffee
A repairman came to my second floor office to repair a rooftop heating unit. It was ten degrees and howling wind. He climbed out the window and worked on the balky unit for an hour. He clambered back in and stood looking out. I said, “Coffee?” He nodded. I fetched my thermos, poured coffee into a cup and handed it to him. He held the cup with both hands. We stood there for a few minutes. We said nothing but drank coffee and looked out at the snowy roof, lost in our own thoughts. He said, “Thanks.” I said, “Anytime.”
